Custom Carpentry and Millwork for Los Angeles Homes
Aggregate Construction Group is a general contractor with an in-house carpentry operation, which means the millwork in a project is drawn, built, and installed by people who answer to the same schedule as the rest of the job. That matters more than it sounds. When cabinetry is subcontracted out, a two week shop delay stalls paint, flooring, and countertop template behind it. When it is in house, the shop schedule is part of the build schedule from day one.
We work through the Westside, the Valley, and the coastal neighborhoods, and the houses set the brief. Period homes in Pacific Palisades and the older Westside streets carry profiles worth matching rather than replacing, so we mill trim to the existing profile instead of substituting the closest stock item. Mid-century houses want the opposite, flat slab doors, minimal reveals, and grain that runs continuously across a run of fronts.
The Millwork We Design and Build
We build kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, entertainment walls, home office built-ins, window seats, bookcases, closet systems, mudroom benches, wainscoting, board and batten, picture rail, coffered and beamed ceilings, stair treads and railings, interior doors and casing, mantels, and exterior trim and soffit detail. Storage work usually returns more than decorative work does, because a wall of shallow built-ins in a small Los Angeles house replaces furniture that was eating floor area. Cabinet fronts and vanities feed directly into our kitchen remodels and bathroom remodels, so a whole-house project carries one set of profiles and one finish schedule instead of three.
Woods, Sheet Goods, Joinery, and Finishes We Specify
Species selection is a durability decision before it is an appearance decision. We work in white and red oak, walnut, maple, poplar for painted work, alder, and vertical grain fir for period matching, over cabinet grade plywood rather than particle board where moisture or weight is a factor. Joinery is chosen for the load, so drawer boxes get dovetail corners, face frames get mortise and tenon or pocket joinery depending on the assembly, and long shelves get a stiffener rather than a thicker board. Finishes run from conversion varnish and catalyzed lacquer for high traffic surfaces to hardwax oil where the client wants a repairable finish, with sprayed and back-rolled paint on painted work. Interior finish coatings we spray fall under the same South Coast AQMD rules that govern our house painting work, so product selection is a compliance question as well as a performance one.
Structural Carpentry, Framing, and Dry Rot Repair
Not all carpentry is finish carpentry. We frame walls, install headers and flush beams when a bearing wall comes out, build stairs, sister and replace joists, and repair the dry rot and termite damage that shows up constantly in Los Angeles houses at rim joists, sill plates, deck ledgers, and window sills. Structural work goes through LADBS with engineering, and hardware and connectors are specified to the approved plans rather than to what is in the truck. Rot found in exterior framing is often the visible end of a flashing or drainage problem, so we trace it back before closing the wall, which is the same approach behind our exterior remodeling work.
Working With Our Carpentry Team
Aggregate Construction Group holds California contractor license number 1034714 and carries general liability and workers compensation coverage. Millwork is quoted from shop drawings you approve before anything is cut, with the species, the finish, the hardware, and the reveal dimensions written into the scope rather than left to the shop’s judgement. Request a walkthrough and we will confirm scope, timeline, and next steps within one business day.
